Notes from a full island

Diary of October in New York

Saturday October 1st

First proper day in NYC then! Jo wanders around with eyes wide open and rather dazed and amazed (or was that just the jet lag.) We walk up broadway to times square and generally explore 5th avenue up to central park where we (by which I mean Jo) find a juice bar to gain some energy before heading off west for a 3hr boat trip around the whole island of Manhattan to take in the sights. Jo’s body is a bit of a temple and gets thoroughly worshipped on the food and drink front … and in comparison mine is less of a temple and more of a landfill site!

Due to a late bus (OK, or maybe we had set off a bit late), we only just got there in time and managed to get on the sailing purely because Jo basically executed some excellent queue jumping!

Handy hint for the future … there is actually rather a lot of Manhattan that isn’t exactly absolutely fascinating from the river … quite possibly two thirds of it!! However, despite a mumbled commentary the weather more than compensated and we were able to soak up yet more sun … I even have a suntan!!

It’s about tea time when we get off the boat and so we walk back through the crowds to the apartment. Discover I can hook up my mini-ipod to the TV so I also get a chance to inflict Emiliana Torrini on Jo …
